La Salle Secondary School

was named after the famous early French explorer, Robert Cavelier, de La Salle (1642-1687).
Students and staff first held classes at Collins Bay H. S. (later Frontenac S.S.) In the fall of 1966. Several months later, in January of 1968, students moved to the new school in the former Pittsburg Township. Renowned as the most beautiful facility in Frontenac County (now Limestone District School Board).

Situated on a beautiful 20 acre piece of property overlooking the Greater Cataraqui (Rideau) River, the school was, for many years, in a truly a rural setting. Urban development gradually influenced the setting and today La Salle Secondary School is surrounded by growing subdivisions and newly built communities.

In the early years (1969-1675) the school population grew steadily and peaked in the mid 70's to between 1100-1200 students. Today, enrolment averages around 800 students.

The school population is composed of a wide variety of students ranging from students whose roots are tied to our community and the surrounding area to those who live up to an hour away. A significant number of students come from CFB Kingston, one of the largest and finest military establishments in Canada. The remaining students join us from numerous small villages, towns and rural side roads to the north and north west and east of the school. The composition of the school's enrolment is one of its strengths because students have the unique opportunity to interact with others of varied backgrounds. La Salle is largely a school made up of students that come and go on school buses.

Some students spend up to an hour to and from school everyday. However, with the expansion of nearby subdivisions surrounding the school and the continued growth in the East end of Kingston many students now walk to school from the surrounding area.

On May 15 - 19, 2003 La Salle celebrated its 35th Anniversary. Many students returned to La Salle and were reunited with old friends from the past. It was a huge success and we now have 368 people on our Alumni database. Information about La Salle Secondary School Alumni can be found at http://lasalle.limestone.on.ca/alumni/index.html.
